Wolves Away Day Review 30/08/05
The Match
A Carl Cort hat trick. Gallen scoring the first Rangers away goal this season. The game started off with a lot of pace and was open right from the start. Three of the goals came in the first 25 minutes. The first goal came after Rangers failed to clear the ball out of defence with Royce making a good save before being beaten. Carl Cort picked up the rebounding ball and scored what was to be the first of his three goals of the night. Gallen equalised 4 minutes later after a bursting run by Stefan Moore down the left hand side and a pin point cross (finally Pablo!) that found Gallen for a rare headed goal. Wolves second goal and Carl Cort’s second came in the 25th minute after another Wolves attack down the left. A cross whipped in and it’s an easy tap in from about 2 yards out.
The second half was always going to be a more controlled affair and it turned out to be. QPR had a lot os possession without muach product. A disallowed own goal by our own Danny Shittu and an injury third for Wolves gave Carl Cort his hat trick.
An entertaining game with end to end action

Rangers Performance
This was a much better performance from rangers than that I had witnessed in the previous 3 games. We looked a lot more composed and actually played football for long periods of time. Individual mistakes cost us but the quality of the opposition was the main reason we lost this match. Gallen didn’t put a foot wrong. Moore looked dangerous on his runs. Furlong looks out of sorts and the whole team looks more like a unit with Santos playing. Shittu was not his normal rock and had a mediocre day at the office.
Improving but still needs a lot of work.

Rangers Support
There were only about 300 to 400 hundred Ranges fans there. Live TV coverage, the long journey and our recent poor performances told a story. Not a lot of singing going on – a little subdued but that is hardly surprising. Considering it was mid week after a Bank Holiday and live on Sky not a bad turn out. 6/10
The Ground
Molinuex is a fantastic stadium. What I don’t like about it are the exposed corners. I am quite tall and was grateful that there was nobody sitting near me as the leg room was as bad as Loftus Road. The cost of the programme was the same as QPR at £3.00. The seat was £23.00 so not bad value. The stadium still has ‘new’ feel to it. I liked the giant screens in either corner that gave instant replays. From where I was sitting there was no clock or scoreboard.
The Rangers fans were sat in the Jack Harris stand and not below the Wolves fans like last season. So this meant that no Rangers fans were spat on this time.

Atmosphere
Wolves fans don’t sing. They boo the opposing team when they have the ball. In fact the Wolves fans spent more time booing than cheering even when they were leading. QPR fans were quiet only raising their voices when Gallen scored. It was like being at a deserted church!

Pre-Match
I had a cheeseburger from one of the vans outside of the stadium. It was o.k. as greasy vans goes and good value. Had a drink in the bar in the away end of the ground and that was o.k. Didn’t like the look of any of the local pubs!
The half time entertainment consisted of giant inflatable balls being kicked around a pole and than back again for a goal to be scored. This was contested between a QPR boy and a Wolves boy and their fathers.

Journey
I live in Bedford and the distance to Wolverhampton is 100 miles by car. Travelling in the rush hour it only took me 1 hour and 45 minutes to get there and a similar time to get back. I parked on a residential street about ten minutes away from the ground which did not cost anything. Obviously traffic jams ensued after the game but nothing too bad. There were roadworks on the M6 ad M1 on the way home.

Police/Stewards
Initially, I thought that the stewarding was one sided against Rangers as I saw a fan being taken away by the stewards. The man who was taken away returned during the game and I asked him what it was about. He had made a complaint against some Wolves fans who were giving it large and the Rangers fan was taken to the control booth to see if the culprits could be identified on CCTV but there wasn’t anything on tape. He was happy with the stewarding and so was I.
When asked questions the stewards knew what they were talking about and were helpful.
Once I got up to tell the Wolves fans that their team was rubbish (in industrial language) and one steward glared at me. He was a bit perplexed when I sat down and continued taking notes in my notebook whilst looking straight at him. He had no idea what I was doing!
West Midlands police were just there not saying or doing anything which is best for everybody.
